The executive committee of the Board of Trustees of Bates College on Tuesday accepted a deed to that portion of Mt. David not already owned by the college. The gift is from the Wakefield heirs and includes about three and one half acres of land. It is understood that at some time an observatory will be erected at the summit. Mt. David, or David’s Mountain, gives a good command of the heavens and would make an admirable site for such a building. It received its name from the original owner, David Davis.

A crew from Herbert E. Callahan Inc. firm of Auburn was engaged yesterday in digging a tunnel under the Maine Central Railroad tracks just north of the fairgrounds underpass on Main Street, Lewiston. The tunnel is being dug for the Lewiston Gas Light Co. and will be utilized for a new gas main being run across the fairgrounds from the College Street area to Main Street. At the point where the tunnel is being dug, the railroad tracks are several feet above the street level, resulting in a deep excavation on either side of the track.

Just two weeks after a pair of inmate escapes and six weeks before a scheduled $8.9 million bond referendum, the state Department of Corrections plans to take a hard look Wednesday at conditions in the Androscoggin County Jail. Earlier this year ,the DOC granted several variances to the county allowing the Sheriff’s Department to run the jail below minimum state standards in some areas. Ironically, one of the variances was a clearance to use the county officials’ parking lot as an outdoor recreation area. Two inmates escaped from the area while other inmates distracted two of the jail officers assigned to supervise the exercise period.
