TURNER — The Hemingway Brothers, a hard-driving bluegrass group from western Maine, will close out the “Music For Mavis” summer concert series on Tuesday, Sept .25.

Performing at 6 p.m. at the community gazebo will be brothers Kip Hemingway on banjo and Dale Hemingway on guitar; Bruce Hobart on fiddle/mandolin; Dan Burke on dobro; and John Sparrow on bass.

The Hemingway siblings, who have been playing together for 20-plus years, are known for their tight harmonies reminiscent of famous brother duos of years past. The old-time sounds of Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmy Martin and especially the Stanley Brothers are the backbone of the band’s material.

Sparrow of Harrison often joins Kip Hemingway for a double banjo tune. Sparrow has been playing bass in various bands since 1961 and was a member of The Danville Junction Boys, a popular bluegrass band from the 1970s to 1990s.

Also a member of the original Danville Junction Boys, Hobart of Mechanic Fallsbrings more than 30 years experience to the band. Burke of Freeport adds a soulful drive to the band’s sound with his old-time Josh Graves instrumentals.

All five members contribute to vocals and often join together for quartet numbers and old-time gospel songs. Together, they create a sound that takes listeners back 50 years.
