WISCASSET — When Lisbon High School boys soccer coach Dan Sylvester looks back on his 2012 Mountain Valley Conference season, he will more than likely ask the question, “What if?”

What if his Greyhounds finished off the multitude of brilliant plays created during the season? What if his squad put up more goals in losses to Mountain Valley, Spruce Mountain and Carrabec, or an early-season tie with Monmouth, four games the Greyhounds dominated statistically?

Even in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to Wiscasset, Sylvester’s charges had chance after chance when the game was still scoreless beyond the midway point of the first half, but failed to pot a goal, only to watch the Wolverines get two in a 47-second span to take control.

“I thought possession was going both ways, then they punch one in, and again teams capitalize on our mistakes and we don’t on the other end,” said Sylvester, whose 2-6-1 Greyhounds will look to bounce back at home Friday against Dirigo. “I thought we did a lot of things right today, but it comes down to putting the ball into the back of the net.”

Wiscasset, which improved to 6-3-1 and visits Spruce Mountain on Thursday, was outshot 5-2 out of the gate, but freshman forward Bryson Grover changed everything for the hosts in quick succession.

He took a pass from JD Souza and fired a hard shot past Lisbon netminder Nate Bergeron with 15:21 remaining in the first half.

Just 47 seconds later, Grover came through again, this time getting his head on a cross by Dale Peaslee for a 2-0 Wiscasset advantage.

“In the first half, we were lazy and didn’t expect what Lisbon had, and they were pretty good, but we finally moved the ball and switched fields,” said Grover of the change in momentum. “I didn’t expect the second goal to go in. Dale made a nice feed there, and it went in.”

“Before Bryson’s goals, we didn’t do too much, but after that we dominated the rest of the first half,” said Wiscasset coach Wayne Benn, who watched his squad finish the first half with an 8-5 shot advantage.

Lisbon’s strong push

Behind the offense of Brady Fenderson, Aaron Halls, Mitchell Austin and Cam Ramich, Lisbon fired the first six shots of the second half, with Wiscasset netminder Nate Mills making five of his eight saves.

“We didn’t carry our momentum into the second half, to Lisbon’s credit. I had Lisbon outshooting us in the second half (7-4), and they hustle and there is no quit in them,” said Benn. “It was a 4-0 game, but it was a tighter contest than that.”

“We need to move the ball more and create more chances,” said Fenderson. “It was frustrating today. We need to get the first goal, and it always seems to be the first goal that gets us. The next couple games we are going to play together and put it together the rest of the way.”

“I am proud of the guys for sticking to it and working hard,” said Sylvester. “The guys know the opportunities are there. It is not like we are not getting our chances. We are missing that final phase. I feel it’s going to come.”

Wiscasset put the game away with 25:10 remaining as Peaslee took a seeing-eye pass from Mason Whitaker and fired a perfectly-placed shot inside the far corner of the goal for a 3-0 lead. Zach Ellison finished off the scoring, with Souza earning his second assist.

For a team that began the preseason with just 12 players on the roster, Wiscasset has come a long way while climbing up the Western Maine Class C Heal Points Standings. The Wolverines entered the game in fourth.

“At first it was scary this year, with so few kids coming out for soccer,” said Grover “So, we had to scramble to get some people. Now, we have a solid team, and hopefully we will stay healthy and continue to win.”

Both teams fired 12 shots in the contest, with Bergeron turning aside four Wiscasset chances. Lisbon finished with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
