TURNER — Town Manager Scott LaFlamme has announced that the hours for the transfer station will change beginning Monday, Oct. 1.

The new hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Previously, the station stayed open until 4 p.m.

The change was approved by selectmen at the request of Public Works Director Jack Moultrie to reduce overtime at the station. It takes the town crew about 15 minutes to clean up and secure the station. By closing 15 minutes earlier, the town will avoid incurring the expense of overtime for these chores.

Moultrie reminded residents that while most people do a good job of sorting their trash and recyclable material, the town incurs extra expense or loses money when material goes into the wrong bin.

Residents are also reminded that the transfer station collects household hazardous material, such as mercury-lined florescent light bulbs, as well as used motor oil, electronic waste, Freon-filled appliances and tires. There is a small disposal fee for tires and Freon-lined appliances.

The town charges $12 for Freon-filled appliances, $2 for tires under 16 inches in diameter and $10 for tires between 16 and 22 inches.

Moultrie said the town does not accept propane tanks, wood debris, shingles or household rubbish in black trash bags.
