Poland is one of six school districts whose staff will split part of almost $25 million for training and incentives over the next five years, according to Maine Department of Education spokesman David Connerty-Marin.

The federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant was announced Saturday.

The program aims to “improve educator evaluation systems, reward effective teachers and principals, and provide greater professional opportunities,” Connerty-Marin wrote in a news release.

Money will go toward stipends, training, materials and technical assistance.

“The work starts immediately,” he said.

Teachers could start seeing performance-based compensation next summer.

Poland shares the grant with Gardiner, Millinocket, Newport, Bangor and Fort Fairfield.

The work is similiar to projects already under way in five other districts, including Lewiston, through the Maine Schools for Excellence program, Connerty-Marin said.
