100 years ago, 1912
Bill Carrigan of Lewiston, premier backstop of the Boston Red Sox, and believed by many to hold an equally exalted position in the American League, will be given a reception on his arrival in this city at the close of the World’s Series. Preliminary arrangements will be made at a meeting to be held in the rooms of the Common Council, Lewiston City Hall this evening. A number of Lewiston business and sporting men got together last week and decided it was up to Lewiston to do something for William F. Carrigan, “The Man Who Is Putting Lewiston On The Map.”

50 years ago, 1962
Because an objection was raised concerning changing the name of a section of the Hardscrabble Road to Sidney Road, the Auburn City Council last night delayed any action on changing names of Ward Four roads as had been recommended by the Auburn Planning Board. Two residents of the road beyond the Lewiston Junction Road said they felt that the road should retain the name of the Hardscrabble Road through to the Empire Road in Poland. The Hardscrabble Road, which starts at the Portland Road, was cut when the Auburn-Lewiston Airport was lengthened. George Field said there is an old Indian legend about how the road got its name.

An increase in the cost of medical coverage for dependents of employees of Bates Fabrics Inc. announced Wednesday has been withdrawn following a meeting Wednesday afternoon between company and union officials, according to a union official. The proposal, which called for “outrageous increases,” according to a union official, could have resulted in employees being charged as much as $89 per week for medical insurance coverage for dependents, depending on the number of dependents and the level of coverage.
