A doctor with offices in Freeport and Virginia has agreed to pay a $321,443 civil claim for falsely billing federal health care programs, authorities said.
Peter M. File, an osteopathic doctor, agreed to pay $321,443 to settle claims involving false billings to Medicare and TRICARE, both federal health care programs, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland.
Medicare provides health insurance primarily to disabled and elderly Americans. TRICARE provides civilian health benefits to military personnel, military retirees and their dependents.
The United States filed a civil complaint against File on Sept. 28 accusing File of violating the federal False Claims Act from October 2005 and June 2011 by billing Medicare and TRICARE for providing osteopathic manipulative treatment, evaluation and management services to patients in violation of applicable Medicare billing guidelines, the written statement says.
The complaint accused File of submitting $315,943 in false claims to Medicare and TRICARE and sought damages totaling the full amount of the alleged false claims. It also includes $5,500 in statutory penalties.
File cooperated in the investigation, the statement says.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General and the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General.
