Benefit for Duane Norton

FARMINGTON — There will be a dinner, auction and dance to benefit Duane Norton on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Farmington Elks Lodge 2430 in West Farmington. Diner will be served from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and consist of ham and fixings.

Following the dinner there will be a live auction then a dance featuring the music of local group Temple Rocks. Tickets are $15 for singles and $25 for couples. Tickets are on sale at numerous businesses around Farmington or at the Farmington Elks or by calling 491-8340 for more information.

Norton has throat cancer and has been travelling for treatments for seven weeks. He is a decorated Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Audubon monthly program

FARMINGTON — The Western Maine Audubon monthly program, on the topic of salmon restoration, will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Roberts C23, University of Maine Farmington.

How many of you know that the Sandy River watershed is the focus of the biggest salmon restoration effort in the Northeast? The Sandy and its tributaries have perfect Atlantic salmon habitat and the first returns of fry hatched in its waters are just now coming up the Kennebec.

Fisheries biologist Paul Christman will be presenting the fascinating story of the work that is happening in our local waters. This program is free and open to the public.

Benefit for Pat, Corey Hardy

FARMINGTON — A benefit supper for Pat and Corey Hardy will be sponsored by the Farmington Falls Fire Company from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Farmington Falls Fire Company House.

Pat was diagnosed with bone cancer in the fall of 2011 and has undergone extensive chemo therapy, which became too much for her so she had to begin radiation therapy. She and Corey have traveled to Boston weekly for the summer of 2012 with the radiation ending on July 25. They still continue to travel for regular checkups and have medication expenses.

The supper will provide continued support for their expenses.

The supper will be spaghetti and meat sauce, rolls, salad, desserts and drinks. Take out will be available. The price will be by donation.

There will also be a raffle for a cord of wood and a few other items.

College planning workshop Oct. 18

WILTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop, “Essentials of College Planning,” for adults 19 and over at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Wilton Career Center, 865 U.S. Route 2E.

MEOC is funded entirely by the U.S. Department of Education. The program helps qualified adults make the transition towards a college education. MEOC, which is housed at the University of Maine, provides assistance to adults living in Maine and helps them go to whichever college or university they choose.

MEOC provides the following services: GED/SAT preparation, college planning, referrals/advocacy, career advising, financial aid advising, college admissions process, application fee waivers for qualified adults. All services are free.

Artists, crafters sought for show

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington’s annual Arts and Crafts Show is seeking artists and crafters from across Maine interested in exhibiting their original and creative work at this open-to-the-public show. This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the UMF Olsen Student Center on South Street.

Lobster stew luncheon Oct. 19

FARMINGTON — The Fairbanks Union Church will hold a lobster stew luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. The luncheon includes stew, biscuit, pickles, cheese, dessert and coffee/tea beverage. For local delivery within five miles of the church, call the church at 778-4705. Youth Hunting Day breakfast

OQUOSSOC —  The Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association will host their annual Youth Hunting Day breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Guides’ Clubhouse on Old Skiway Road. Breakfast will be served from 5:30 to 8 a.m.
