AUBURN — William J. Rogers, American Legion Post 153 of 71 South Main St. is committed to breast cancer awareness and treatment. Tizz E. H. Crowley, Auburn City Councilor, and Doreen Christ, Lewiston City Councilor, organized the walk across the Governor James B. Longley Memorial Bridge on Oct. 1, which began at Fountain Park across from the Veterans Memorial Park. Auburn City Councilor Leroy Walker led the march across the bridge to Auburn Hall where community members, survivors and supporters met to hear the proclamation signed by Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald and Auburn Mayor Jonathan LaBonte.

Paul R. Bernard, American Legion public relations officer, said, “We strongly agree with Ed Desgrosseillier’s and his wife of Hatch Road, Auburn, they stated that breast cancer has affected nearly every family in the Twin Cities and we need to band together to promote awareness and treatment.”

Bernard said that the American Legion’s views on legislation being considered by the Subcommittee on Veterans’ Affairs includes H.R. 3926 which states: Armed Forces Breast Cancer Research Act. This bill would direct the Secretaries of the Departments of Defense and VA to jointly conduct a study on the incidence of breast cancer among members of the Armed Forces and veterans. This study would determine the number of service members and veterans diagnosed with breast cancer; their demographic information; and any possible exposure to hazardous elements or chemical or biological agents.

The American Legion needs many volunteers in a host of areas such as American Legion Baseball, Boys State, citizenship, flag advocacy, flag etiquette, Get Out the Vote, junior shooting sports, oratorical contest, Scouting, youth programs alumni, Child Welfare Foundation, family assistance, scholarships, youth support, Junior ROTC, national security and foreign relations, Operation Comfort Warriors, Troop support, homelessness, veteran services, family support network, Heroes to Hometown and more.

The group is constantly looking for individuals who qualify to serve in the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of The American Legion and the Legion Riders, said Bernard.
