A Lewiston Finance Board attempt to dip into the police department salary account for school bus money, questioned the previous night by the City Council, last night drew opposition from members of the Police Commission. Needing $6,000 to finance the operation of two more school buses until the end of the fiscal year, the FB on Monday night proposed two budget transfers. It was recommended taking $2,500 from the school department salary account and $3,500 from the police salary account. It was reported that the police department has been operating a few men short of budget allowances since the start of the fiscal year and, because of this, there is money available in the police account.

A group of Twin Cities excavating contractors got what they wanted Monday night from the Auburn City Council: a little more time. City officials have been working since last fall to put more teeth in the city’s 17-year-old excavation ordinance, but the remedies proposed Monday by the Public Works Department were still not what the contractors wanted. The major changes proposed for the ordinance called for extending the contractor’s liability for restored trenches from 18 months to five years. Two meetings to which 66 contractors were invited have already been held, but several contractors said they were promised one more session and disagreed with what was on the table.
