BANGOR — When Matt Cosgrove made a leaping touchdown catch to give Bangor High School the lead with 7:13 remaining, Oxford Hills appeared to be in trouble.
The Vikings simply went back to work with their “flexbone” offense. Oxford Hills marched 66 yards on 15 plays and ate up more than 6½ minutes in the process to pull out a 22-15 Pine Tree Conference football victory over the Rams at Cameron Stadium.
Senior quarterback Ryan Godin punched it into the end zone from the 2-yard line on a fourth-and-goal play with 36.1 seconds left to cap off Oxford Hills’ comeback.
The late heroics came after Bangor had put together a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive to take a 15-14 lead on Carl Farnham’s 31-yard TD strike to Cosgrove with 7:19 remaining.
Godin directed the Vikings’ flexbone option attack, carrying 22 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore halfback Malik Geiger netted 118 yards on 13 carries, including a 62-yard scoring scamper in the second quarter.
Oxford Hills (3-3) churned out 303 rushing yards on 54 attempts and attempted only four passes.
Bangor (2-4) had jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game’s first four minutes.
The Rams got on the board on the Vikings’ first series when Garrett Strout and Nick Ashey tackled NIck Bowie in the end zone for a safety at the 9:21 mark.
Bangor took the ball after the ensuing free kick and went 39 yards on four plays. Zeb Tuell scored from four yards out and Farnham added the PAT to make it 9-0 with 8:04 to play in the quarter.
The Vikings received a big boost when Geiger burst through the middle and sprinted 62 yards for a score. Davis Turner’s conversion rush made it a 9-8 game with 10:58 left in the half.
Oxford Hills scored again on its next possession, taking over at the Bangor 37 after punter Farnham was forced to take off running under the rush of Dexter Turner.
The Vikings needed eight plays to cash in on Godin’s 1-yard plunge, which gave them a 14-9 edge with 6:29 left in the half.
That score held up until Bangor’s fourth-quarter drive.
Oxford Hills exhibited excellent execution in its offensive scheme. Some of their fakes were so impressive that game officials twice blew plays dead, thinking a running back had the ball, as Godin ran into the secondary headed for potential touchdowns.
The Vikings limited the Rams to 95 rushing yards on 32 attempts, although Bangor did put up some numbers through the air. Farnham completed 15 of 25 passes for 152 yards and the TD.
Senior wide receiver Matt Cosgrove, the son of University of Maine head football coach Jack Cosgrove, made 10 catches for 113 yards and a score.
