I write in response to the article printed Oct. 2, “MPA vacates Cheverus’ 2010 title.”
I agree with Coach Adams’ comments regarding the 2010 title.
What bothers me are the comments attributed to the Cheverus administration and specifically Cheverus Athletic Director Gary Hoyt and Coach Bob Brown. They don’t seem to take any responsibility for the situation. I would think that as soon as Indiana Faithfull enrolled at Cheverus as an exchange student, they would have checked his status as a student-athlete.
Once the Maine Principals’ Association made the ruling that Faithfull should have been ineligible for the entire season, Cheverus only reacted to the injunction granted to the Faithfull family. They could have kept Faithfull on the bench, knowing that a ruling would be made at a later date.
We are talking about a team sport that should build character and responsibility in student athletes. I think Cheverus failed the test and set a bad example for all of its students.
I am afraid that is part of the fabric of today’s society — win at any cost.
