100 years ago, 1912
A man unknown to people in Lewiston, supposed to be Bela Ferrin of Montpelier, Vt., fell headlong down a flight of stairs at Hotel Rockingham, Middle Street, this city, about six o’clock Sunday evening, and died at St. Mary’s hospital round 2:30 o’clock Monday morning. Ferrin, if such is his name, appears to have been about 45 years old and, from papers in his pocket, it would seem that he was time-keeper in the street department at Montpelier. It is learned from people at the hotel that Ferrin came there Sept. 26. He registered under the name of “Mr. Edwards” but later gave the name of “Bela Ferrin” to the clerk.

50 years ago, 1962
An Auburn resident reported to police last night that he had been assaulted when he attempted to collect some money due him. When he appeared at police headquarters about 8:05 p.m. his face was cut and bruised, according to authorities. He told police that a man who owed him the money paid up and then punched him.

25 years ago, 1987
Lisbon selectmen on Tuesday night granted a request by Fire Chief Howard Ricker that Main Street in Lisbon Village from Gartley Street to Route 196 be closed Oct. 18 between 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. while the town holds a community celebration, “Lisbon Village — A New Beginning.” Ricker told selectmen there will be a hand tub demonstration, antique cars and numerous other activities. “People are going to be dancing in the street more or less,” he added. The revitalization of Lisbon Village includes new streets, brick sidewalks, antique-style street lanterns, benches, a riverside park, renovations and expansions by a number of businesses as well as other improvements.
