NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico to allow the use of Norway’s Fire Engine 3 for class work.

The agreement stipulates that the tanker remains the property of Norway Fire Department and will be returned to the town if either the terms of the agreement are not met or the school has no further use for the apparatus, Fire Chief Dennis Yates told selectmen at its last board meeting Oct. 5.

The 1960s 500-gallon Maxim tanker has been stripped of tools, hoses, ladders and air tanks and was set to be taken out of service because of its age. The department expects the new tanker replacement to arrive Dec. 15, Yates said.

Under the agreement, the fire science class will use the apparatus for training. The school will provide insurance, housing and maintenance costs for it. It will be used as a learning prop and not for firefighting, according to the agreement.

The fire science classes are being taught by Jonathan Longley, a deputy chief with the Paris Fire Department.
