100 years ago, 1912
At the age of 92 years and nearly nine months, Joseph M. Niles, the oldest resident of the town of Webster, died at his home in Sabatis shortly after seven o’clock. Mr. Niles had been ill two seeks with bronchial pneumonia. His grandfather was Robert Niles, a pioneer settler, who came from York county 150 years ago and located in Webster, where he conducted lumber and grist mills for years, being a prosperous business man, who did much for the place. For many years, Joseph Niles was in the harness business in Sabatis and for 30 years he was in company with a son, Amasa Niles, a well-known resident of this place, who died three years ago.

50 years ago, 1962
Work is being completed on the new 50- by 100-foot home of Lewiston Council 106, Knights of Columbus. Located on East Avenue, the new quarters will be officially opened Nov.3, a Saturday. The program includes an open house starting at 6 p.m., a roast beef dinner at 7:15, and a dance. The new quarters were constructed at a cost of $70,000. The structure contains two halls, a kitchen and a cafeteria.

25 years ago, 1987
As the days grew closer to the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting this year, President Gary L. Adams said the chamber’s executive assistant was getting more and more curious about who was getting this year’s President’s Award. Joyce a Paradis “kept asking me who’s getting the award this year,” said Adams. But he said he managed to keep secret the fact that the recipient , or at least one of them, was Paradis herself. Adams gave a second President’s Award to Doris T. Fournier, the chamber’s receptionist and secretary.
