A torchlight parade, headed by a band with over 225 men in line, was held Thursday evening previous to the men’s mass meeting held under the auspices of the Maine State Sunday School Association, which has been in session in Auburn for three days. The men enjoyed a supper in the Park Street M.E. Church, Lewiston, and at seven o’clock they formed in line, headed by the Lewiston Brigade Band, marched up Lisbon to Main Street, down Main to the North Bridge and into Auburn, up Court to High Street Congregational Church, which is the convention church. A large number of women were gathered in front of the church and they applauded the parade as it passed. All the protestant clergymen were in the parade and nearly every local church was represented by laymen.

Whether or not Western Promenade and/or Beacon Avenue will become “short cuts” for some residents of that section of Auburn has by no means been finally determined. Ward Two Councilman Donald E. Cooper, who made the suggestion at the last council meeting, to eliminate the one-way designation of those two streets, indicated today he may change his mind. A petition was reportedly being circulated in the neighborhood, and receiving substantial endorsement, calling on the city council to leave things as they are. Currently, western Promenade is designated one-way from Highland Avenue to Lake Street  with traffic permitted in an opposite direction only.

Androscoggin County Commissioners can expect plenty of questions when they present county jail expansion plans to Lewiston officials Thursday. Voters will be asked whether the county should borrow $8.9 million for the project in a referendum next month. If voters approve the bond issue, a three-story addition to the jail is scheduled for completion in 1991.
