FRYEBURG — The box score will show Spruce Mountain’s season ended on Devine Dockery’s three-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left. But when the Phoenix jog their memories about Saturday’s one-game wild card for a Campbell Conference playoff spot, the jog will rarely get beyond the third quarter.

Fryeburg Academy epic 14-play, 83-yard drive turned a 7-6 deficit into a 14-7 victory which secured for the Raiders the seventh seed in next week’s quarterfinals and simultaneously sabotaged Spruce Mountain’s playoff hopes Saturday afternoon.

With Dockery (24 carries, 122 yards) playing much of the game on a balky knee and backup QB Billy Rascoe (16 carries, 80 yards, TD pass) playing in place of his injured brother, Andrew, the Raiders (4-4) chewed up the tiring Phoenix on a muggy final drive.

Rascoe made the most of his three completions on the day, with two coming on the winning march. Right after connecting on a 10-yard pass to Bright Amoako to shorten a second-and-17, he neutralized a third-down sack by Austin Couture by completing a 21-yard pass to Amoako to keep the drive alive.

“I’ve been practicing all season and all last year and the year before that,” said Rascoe, a sophomore. “I got lucky. It was definitely lucky.”

Five runs by Dockery and a 14-yard gain by Rascoe gave the Raiders first and goal at the 7. A holding penalty wiped out Dockery’s TD run from there and pushed them back to the 16. Dockery and Rascoe got them to the 3, then Dockery took a pitch left and cruised into the end zone. Rascoe added the two-point conversion.

“We had to drive it in there because we had to go to the playoffs,” Dockery said. “That was phenomenal blocking by Jake Thurston and Kyle Bonner outside. He just pushed the end out and I saw daylight and scored.”

Kevin Reardon sealed the win with his interception with 40 seconds left.

Spruce Mountain had two chances to widen its one-point lead in the third quarter. The Phoenix held the ball for the first nine minutes of the second half, converting on fourth down twice and penetrating as deep as Fryeburg’s 14. But a holding penalty pushed them back to the 31 and the drive stalled.

A fumble recovery by Corey Ridley gave Spruce Mountain the ball again at Fryeburg’s 39. But Alwayne Uter was dropped for a one-yard loss on third down and the Phoenix failed to convert on 4th and 2.

“Our inexperience showed. We had a lot of penalties. We just couldn’t make that one extra play,” Spruce Mountain coach Walter Polky said. “We got what we wanted. We got a lot of short-yardage situations. We just couldn’t maintain it.”

“They had the ball the whole third quarter. They beat us up and have a great drive and in the end we still get a stop,” Fryeburg coach Dave Turner said.

Spruce Mountain got the first big stop of the game, smothering a Fryeburg drive to the 17 to start the game. The Raiders did score on their second drive. Rascoe hooked up with Tanner Wentworth for a 44-yard TD pass. Spruce stuffed the two-point conversion to keep it 6-0 Raiders.

Spruce took the lead shortly after Dockery had to be helped to the sidelines with a knee injury. Peter Theriault executed the QB draw perfectly and burst up the middle on a 60-yard scoring run. Brandon Stearns’ PAT gave them a one-point lead with 5:55 left in the half.

With only four varsity players returning from last year, Polky narrowly missed the playoffs. Ten seniors will graduate.

“It’s been quite a learning experience this year,” Polky said. “I feel bad for our seniors. They’ve done everything I’ve asked.”
