100 years ago, 1912
We hear talk of construction of several new large shops in Lewiston. The rapid growth of department stores in all parts of the country is a movement for the relief of the consumer and floor space of department stores in Boston has increased by 70 percent in the past five years. Agitation for a new hotel also is reviving. A correspondent says that Auburn should take over the Franklin company’s hillside and make it into an ideal park. This would take into a park the many acres between Upper Court Street and Minot Avenue, to the limit of private property.

50 years ago, 1962

A state agency concerned with treating the mentally retarded is breaking new ground and a halfway house here is one of the beneficiaries. The Fellowship House, which operates a 15-bed shelter at 88 Third St., Auburn, for male substance abusers has received a $15,000 grant.
