MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society needs people to sustain the town’s local heritage. At the society’s next meeting, Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. this issue will take center stage. If more people cannot be attracted to participate in the society’s matters and affairs then the society’s direction will diminish greatly.

Up until several years ago the historical society was simply a small group of citizens who wished to keep the history of the town alive with occasional, casual meetings offering glimpses of its rich past. Then by a gracious act by the church members of the First Congregational Church, the building and its contents were bequeathed to the society, including the 1904 organ.

In the course of time the society has encouraged more community interest and participation. Many people have donated a score of material to the society’s holdings. But while the rich store of artifacts and memorabilia has increased, people’s involvement in the society has dwindled. And therein lies the problem.

The society wants to find out how it can enlist more people and keep them involved. The society needs people to help in organizing and maintaining the building and this town’s history. The meeting will be held downstairs at the historical society, 64 Elm St. A tour of the premises showcasing what has been done and what is planned will also be conducted.
