100 years ago, 1912
Once more Stevens’ Mills grange is busy with its annual fair and this time they are busy in earnest. The exhibits in the agricultural department are larger and better than ever, and upstairs the pretty booths and tables attract the attention of all. Upstairs, which appears to be a veritable Hallowe’en, are all sorts of booths. There is the orange tree, the home-made candy booth, and the table where holders sell like hot cakes. An entertainment is provided each night of the fair and Wednesday evening a standard was set which will be hard to excel, including a piano solo, two farces and several readings.

50 years ago, 1962
Lewiston High School Principal Linwood J. Kelley addressed his students during classes Thursday relative to the Cuban situation, urging them to “do your job better.” He explained that in view of the world situation, he felt the students wanted him to say something. Over the public address system, he told the student body that “each of us at our own age has a responsibility. We should do our jobs better.” He told the students to properly assess the present situation, “Everybody is disturbed, naturally,” he said. Kelley said that if anything of urgency occurred, he would notify the students.

25 years ago, 1987
The Lewiston-Auburn Chamber of Commerce’s Oct. 27 breakfast meeting to be held at Quality Inn, Auburn, will address the referendum on the Maine Yankee nuclear plant and hear a speaker from Central Maine Power Co. “The possible discontinuance of Maine Yankee poses a serious concern for Maine businesses,” the chamber said in a prepared statement.
