PORTLAND —  At a ceremony on Sept. 23, Cheverus High School presented awards at its Undergraduates Awards Night. Among those earning awards and honors were the following area students:

The top Cheverus High School student who took the American High School Math Exam: Zach Walker-Elders, senior of Lisbon Falls

Awards for Academic Excellence

Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded for academic excellence in a particular subject area. The student who earns the highest grade point average in one class will receive a bronze certificate. Students who earn the highest grade point average for two classes will receive a silver certificate. And students who achieve the highest grade point average in three or more classes will be presented with a gold certificate.

Bronze, sophomores: Michael Jones, Gray, intro to physical science; Kyle Severance, Gray, intro to physical science; Casey Simpson, Casco, academic computing essentials.

Bronze, senior: Zachary Walker-Elders, Lisbon Falls, AP environmental science.

Silver, junior: Owen Kivela, Pownal, biology and Spanish III honors

Silver, seniors: Tyler Small, Gray, English II and Spanish III; Tracey Whitmore, Gray, intro to art and drawing & painting.

Gold, sophomore: Kaitlyn Dostie, Raymond, geometry honors, Spanish II honors, history I and English honors.

The Wheeling Jesuit University Award is presented to a student based on their academic performance, extracurricular involvement and commitment to serving the community. The book presented, “Tattoos on the Heart,” was written by a Jesuit priest who founded Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention program in the country. In addition to the book, the recipient will receive a $1000 scholarship, renewable for four years. This year’s recipient has distinguished himself as a scholar, earning high honors and acceptance to the National Honor Society. He has been a member of the Math Team, the Cross Country Team, the Swimming and Diving Team and the Sailing Team. The award was presented to Zachary Walker-Elders, a senior, of Lisbon Falls.
