RUMFORD — A group of women who call themselves T-Gals will present area veterans with handmade quilts Saturday as part of the nationwide Make A Difference Day.
The T-Gals, which stands for The Giving Angel Lady Stitchers, said they knew exactly what they wanted to do for Make A Difference Day on Oct. 27, a day dedicated to community service.
“We chose to sew quilts for our veterans,” Arlene Thibeau said, “and on Saturday, we’ll be bringing them to the veterans’ houses.” The quilts are “a way to thank our veterans for their service to our nation, and fighting to protect us.”
The eight women from Rumford, Mexico, Carthage and Turner had donations from the Fraternal Order of Eagles auxiliary, Rumford House of Pizza, Hannaford and Dunkin’ Donuts. American Legion Post 24 allowed them to use its hall for sewing and brewed coffee for them in the morning.
Thibeau said anyone who wants to make a quilt for veterans or donate money to buy materials for more quilts is welcome to do so.
“We ask that the dimensions of the quilt are 44 by 58 so that they will cover the men and women we give them to,” she said.
With such a small number of T-Gals, they were not able to make as many quilts as they wished, she said.
“We can’t do all the quilts by ourselves,” Thibeau said. “Every little bit helps.”
