RUMFORD — A charity dance Saturday, Nov. 3, at the American Legion Hall on Congress Street will raise money for the River Valley Relay for Life.
The benefit is organized by a group called Cancer Crusaders.
From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. there will be a raffle of prizes for residents who “don’t necessarily want to show up for a dance but still want to participate,” team captain Cindy Milligan said. The grand prize is a “lottery tree,” she said. “Basically, each week, we buy a lottery ticket and stick it on a small tree, and right before Christmas, we’ll give the tree to the winner. There ends up being at least $200 worth of lottery tickets on it by the end,” she said.
The dance is being called a Hunters Hoedown Dance because it’s the start of the deer hunting season, Milligan said. The hall will be decorated in camouflage and fluorescent orange to fit the theme.
From 7 to 11 p.m., Stereo-Type, a rock band from Western Maine that plays music from the 1980s and ’90s, will play for dancing. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Davis Florist.
Milligan said this is the third year Cancer Crusaders has held a dance to benefit River Valley Relay for Life. The group also organized the Halloween Walk on Isthmus Street.
“I’m a survivor, my husband’s a survivor, my mother passed away from cancer,” Milligan said. “We’re just trying to do something to raise money for a great cause.”
