I enjoyed the Oct. 21 profiles of two of the manufacturing businesses in Lewiston, Purestat Technologies and Allen Manufacturing. It is good to learn more about some of the work that goes on around us that many of us know little about. It is also good to know that the slowdown and recession have not devastated all manufacturing, especially locally.

But I was also taken by the different attitudes and views toward government between Rich Kullson of Purestat, and David Allen, especially during an election season when so many of us differ so greatly about the role of government.

Mr. Kullson said he welcomed rules and regulations that protect employees and set guidelines for companies to follow. He also implied that employee morale was high due to good benefits and a positive work environment.

Mr. Allen did not share that attitude. He wants no government involvement or rule making, even if it could help with training or ways for employees to succeed in reaching higher goals. He does not provide health insurance and will not do so even if it means that his company cannot grow beyond a certain point.

I thought that this was a good real-time example of some of the issues the public faces. I believe that I would much rather work for Mr. Kullson, and that more people would benefit if all employers ran their business the way he does.
