FRYEBURG — The police chief and two officers have been cleared of wrongdoing and returned to duty after an investigation into accusations they were involved in a drinking party with minors, Town Manager Sharon Jackson said in a statement.

Chief Philip Weymouth, Reserve Officer Dale Stout and Reserve Officer Andrew Ward were placed on administrative leave Oct. 25, pending the investigation.

The Bridgton News published a story that day that said it received a typewritten letter signed by “Concerned Fryeburg Residents” along with two photographs. One showed a woman dancing on the hood of a truck and the other showed two police officers smiling next to her.

The letter said the police officers encouraged teenagers to drink beer that had been confiscated by police over the summer, and that Chief Philip Weymouth gave his blessing to the party after taking beer for himself, a charge Weymouth denied.

The town hired Attorney Jonathan Goodman of the law firm Troubh Heisler to conduct an investigation, Jackson said, and all three were cleared of wrongdoing.

Jackson’s statement did not give details about what the investigation revealed, but she said previously that the matter was a personnel issue and therefore confidential.
