NORWAY — Unofficial results show Oxford County Commissioner Steven Merrill won re-election over challenger Charleen Chase in Tuesday’s election.

Merrill was shown with 5,087 votes to Chase’s 4,723, according to numbers collected by the Bangor Daily News, but the figures didn’t include results from Hanover, where 162 voted Tuesday.

Although the Hanover votes weren’t enough to change the outcome, Merrill said Wednesday he was not yet announcing a win. “I should be all right, but it hasn’t been confirmed by anyone that I know of,” he said. “I’ve just been saying, ‘Yeah, I think I’m there.”

He said he was happy that he and Chase had run positive campaigns. “Charleen is a good candidate. She’s a strong candidate. We’ve known each other for a long time,” he said. “I had to work hard for it.”

Merrill said he couldn’t campaign for four weeks due to pneumonia, but he had a lot of help. He said he’s making a list of people he needs to thank for campaigning for him.

Chase, a former executive director of Community Concepts, said she was hoping to bring her executive experience and extensive knowledge of county issues to the position.

Merrill was appointed to the commission in 1994, and the 2012 election was his fifth time running. He is chairman of the commission and represents Oxford County at the Maine County Commissioners Board.

He represents District 1, which includes the towns of Bethel, Brownfield, Fryeburg, Hanover, Hiram, Lovell, Norway, Porter, Stow, Sweden, Waterford, Batchelder’s Grant and Mason Township.
