Rep. Melvin Newendyke eked out a win against Democratic challenger Rachel Sukeforth Tuesday to hang on to his House 80 seat.
When all of the votes were counted, Republican Newendyke had won by 8 votes, meaning Sukeforth could request a recount. As of Thursday night, it remained unclear whether she intends to do so.
The Sun Journal incorrectly reported on Wednesday that Sukeforth had won the race. But according to final figures, her 2,446 votes were too few against Newendyke’s 2,454.
Sukeforth could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
District 80 comprises Litchfield, Monmouth and Wales. According to final numbers collected by the Bangor Daily News, Sukeforth garnered more votes in Monmouth but lost in the other two towns.
Newendyke, a retired banker and auditor, is completing his first term in the Legislature.
