PARIS — Police Chief David Verrier watched Thursday morning as a woman crashed her car into the Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Main Street.

Verrier and three other officers were next door at Burger King at about 7:35 a.m. when Verrier saw a car pull into a parking space near the Dunkin’ Donuts entrance. Instead of stopping, however, the Ford sedan drove up onto the curb and smashed into the entrance.

Verrier said the driver, Maria Whitney, 56, of Norway, wasn’t injured, but her vehicle had about $3,000 damage.

He said the crash was caused by driver error.

“Instead of hitting the brake, she hit the gas and drove right into the building,” he said.

Verrier said he never saw a brake light go on, and it looked like she may have accelerated.

“Very rarely do you see something like that,” he said.

He and his colleagues ran over to the crash immediately, he said.
