Audubon monthly program

FARMINGTON — Western Maine Audubon Monthly Program at 7 p.m.  on Wednesday, Nov. 14, will discuss “The Role of Climate and Carbon Cycling in Shaping Western Maine’s Landscape.” It will be held in 23 Roberts Learning Center at University of Maine, Farmington, and is free and open to the public.

Professor Doug Reusch is an associate professor of geology at the University of Maine at Farmington. He is interested in the origins and significance of mountains, notably the New England Appalachians, and also how tectonic processes affect carbon cycling and Earth’s climate. His talk will focus on carbon cycles, and how those carbon cycles affect not only climate but the very shape of the earth in its mountains, rivers and soils.

Neighborly Senior Citizens

PERU — The Neighborly Senior Citizens will hold their monthly meeting a week early, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, this month only. The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at the old Peru school.

A potluck meal will be served after the meeting. Bring a hot dish to share or pay $3 for the meal. The snow date will be Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Free nutrition workshop at Dempsey

RUMFORD — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free nutrition workshop for anyone interested in learning more about healthy eating. “Cancer and Nutrition: Separating Fact from Fiction” will take place Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Rumford Hospital, Conference Room A.

Good nutrition plays an important role in staying healthy and preventing cancer. Registered Dietitian Justin Bakaian will discuss some of the popular nutritional claims that we hear about in the media and identify which foods and behaviors will actively reduce cancer risk. He will also provide the tools needed to separate valid claims from misinformation.

Benefit Chinese/silent auction

DENMARK — The seventh annual Huskies Benefit Chinese/Silent Auction will be held at Brownfield/Denmark Elementary on Saturday, Nov. 17. Doors open at 4 p.m., spaghetti dinner at 5.

Cost is $5 for adults, $3 K-fifth grade, no charge for 4 years and under. Ticket pulling begins at 6:30.

Christmas Cupboard is Nov. 17

FRYEBURG — The Christmas Cupboard will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at Fryeburg New Church, 12 Oxford St.

There will be fudge and candy, baked goods, knitted items, mittens, handmade crafts, wreaths, white elephants, raffle items and more.

Muffins, doughnut holes, coffee and hot chocolate will be on sale. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Drawing will be at noon.

PARIS — Free clothes will be available from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Road.

Harrison VFW public breakfast

HARRISON — The Harrison VFW Post on the Waterford Road will hold its popular breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Post on Route 35.

The breakfast features scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, home fries, fruit cup, sweet breads, orange juice and beverage. Donations accepted.

Finnish-American Heritage Society

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will hold their regular monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Scott Andrews of the Maine Ski Museum will present the program which will include a vintage film called “From Tree to Ski” which features ski making at the Paris Manufacturing Company. It shows the process from unloading logs to the finished product. He will also speak about the contributions of Finns, Swedes and Norwegians to skiing in Maine.

A coffee social will follow the film. The public is invited.

Historical Society annual meeting

STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society’s Annual Meeting will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Community Building on Main Street. Potluck dinner and a pig-in-a-poke auction will follow. Put something in a brown paper bag for the auction.

The slate of officers for the year 2013 to be voted on will be as follows: President/treasurer, Mary Henderson; vice president, Mary Hopson; secretary, Hazel Hogan; curator, Lee Henderson; and directors, Duluth Wing, June Parsons and Peter Pease. In an effort to interest more people in joining the society we ask that each member bring a guest.

Books, gifts, music Nov. 19, 20

FARMINGTON — Something for everyone, including books, gifts and music, will be available at Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Bass Room from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20. Sponsored by FMH Auxiliary, the event is open to the public and provides great Christmas shopping.

Sky program rescheduled

RANGELEY — The Wilhelm Reich Museum Sky Program has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Nov. 20, due to predicted cloudy weather. The program takes place at dusk at the Conference Center on Dodge Pond Road. For more information call 864-3443.

Red Hat Mommas meet Nov. 29

MEXICO — The Red Hat Mommas of Western Maine met in October at CMCC Culinary Arts School with 27 in attendance.

The next meeting is Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Congregational Church. A mystery dinner will be provided.
