DIXFIELD — With winter rapidly approaching and the temperature dropping, the Swasey-Torrey American Legion Post 100 is looking to help one lucky household by raffling off 100 gallons of K-2 heating fuel this Friday.
Edward Ellis, the first vice commander for the Dixfield American Legion, said the Legion is selling raffle tickets for $5 each on Monday and Friday afternoons. Ellis said the winner will receive 100 gallons of fuel or an equal cash value, while the second place ticket holder will receive a $50 Walmart gift card.
“We’re going by Hometown Energy’s price for oil,” Ellis said. “Whoever wins will receive enough cash from us to purchase 100 gallons of oil.”
Ellis said that last year the Dixfield American Legion Post had a similar raffle, but that ticket sales haven’t been as high this year “because of the economy.”
“Right now, we have enough money to cover the oil prize, as well as the Walmart gift card,” Ellis said, “but if ticket sales don’t pick up, we’ll end up eating the rest of the price.”
Anybody is welcome to buy a ticket, according to Ellis, whether they’re from the Dixfield region or not.
“Last year, a gentleman from Southern Maine won,” Ellis said. “Also, we had a rally this fall in Madison. I brought some tickets over there to sell.”
The proceeds will go toward supporting Legion programs. Ellis said that “if we can get enough money, the Legion Riders have designated somewhere between $25 and $50 to donate to the homeless veterans of Maine, or the food pantry.”
