HALLOWELL — Gaslight Theater will hold auditions for its first play of 2013, “Mrs. Packard,” in early December at Hallowell City Hall.

The play, which has roles for four males and five females, will be performed March 22-30.

“Mrs. Packard” tells the true story of Calvinist preacher Theophilus Packard’s actions to commit his wife, Elizabeth Parsons Ware Packard, to an asylum on the grounds of insanity because she disagreed with his beliefs in church doctrine.

In 1861, Illinois law held that a husband could commit his wife to an asylum without her consent or having to produce any evidence at a public hearing. Packard claimed his wife was not just mentally impaired but unable to care for the couple’s six children.

Tryouts will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1,  in City Hall chambers and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4,  in the auditorium. For more information, contact director  Bruce Hertz at 685-9930, 458-2201 or bhertz@roadrunner.com.
