100 years ago, 1912
The report of the Special Committee on Decorative Street Lights was submitted at last evening’s meeting of the Lewiston City Government and was accepted. The City Government voted to purchase iron poles for Main Street from North Bridge to Hospital Square and for Lisbon Street from Main to Birch. At a meeting of the committee which followed, the contract was awarded to the Ornamental Lighting Company of New York City.

50 years ago, 1962
Kiddies in both Lewiston and Auburn will be tugging their Moms and Dads out of bed early tomorrow morning to make sure they beat the crowds to greet Santa Claus on his arrival here from the North Pole. The distinguished visitor will make his annual arrival from a showboat which will move down the Androscoggin River and dock on lower Canal Street. Santa will parade from Chapel Street, to Bates, to Spruce, to Lisbon Street and then to Main Street and the B. Peck Co. store where he’ll be until Christmas Eve.

25 years ago, 1987
Central Maine Medical Center has several activities planned for “The Great American Smokeout” next week. A breath Ecolyzer test will be provided to the public free of charge in the cafeteria. The test measures the amount of carbon monoxide in the bloodstream. The CMMC cafeteria will feature a “Cold-Turkey Sandwich” for “non-smoking smokers.” Throughout the entire week of “The Great American Smokeout,” Special Delivery, CMMC’s family birthing center, will provide “I Was Born A Non-Smoker” shirts to newborns. The medical center will also sponsor a number of other stop-smoking activities for employees.
