BUCKFIELD — Selectmen decided Tuesday to get estimates on renovating the fire station as well as building a new one after discussing the two options.

There are several issues with the old station including mold and Town Manager Dana Lee pointed out that no one in town is qualified to give estimates on a renovation with all the electrical and roof issues.

The board agreed to have Lee get three qualified estimates on renovations and a new building while asking contractors for facts and figures.

In other news, board members said they were happy with their decision to extend maintenance on McAlister Road to beyond pole 15 where there is a turnaround. Lee brought in new material from the Maine Municipal Association that indicates the extension might be considered a new road and would have to go to a town meeting to be maintained. The Board continued to stand by its former opinion that this was just a resumption of road maintenance responsibility.

Selectmen also decided to have the road foreman use the town truck as he inspects roads rather than his own vehicle due to liability issues.

The Board did some tweaking to the personnel policy with a few minor changes.

Lee announced that at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4, there will be singing by the school choirs and a tree lighting at the gazebo where Santa will arrive. Selectmen will meet following the festivities. All are invited to attend.
