DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wanted to let your readers know that Community Concepts can provide transportation services to breast cancer treatment, diagnostics or support services. We can reimburse the patient’s mileage or provide a volunteer driver to get the patient to services.

This program is funded by a grant from the Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Mileage sheets can be mailed to those who need them. There are no income guidelines for this program.

Those interested can call Community Concepts at 800-866-5588.

Also, Community Concepts is looking for volunteer drivers. This is the perfect opportunity for retirees, stay-at-home moms or anyone who likes to drive to help those in their communities get to medical care. Drivers receive a 41-cent-per-mile reimbursement.

For more information on this opportunity, contact Ashley at Community Concepts. Once again the number is 1-800-866-5588.

Community Concepts serves Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. Thank you for all you do. — Jennifer Warriner, Community Concepts, www.community-concepts.org, JWarriner@community-concepts.org

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I hope you or your readers might be able to help me, as you have in the past. I am elderly and disabled with a very low income.

I am in need of an electric bed with the top that lefts and bends. I need queen-sized because I have sleep apnea. I need it to be clean and in good condition with no creepy-crawly tenants.

I also need a good stackable apartment-size washer-dryer. Due to seizures I am unable to drive and can’t walk much because of spinal birth defects.

If anyone knows of any place that has these items or if anyone would sell them for low monthly payments, I would like to buy them. Please call me at 514-6846, and I will call you back. — Lyn

ANSWER: Sun Spots gets many letters from people who need something. Many have no ability to pay. However, Sun Spots can only run requests for free items from nonprofit organizations; individuals need to be able to pay.

The first stop for those with no resources should be Community Concepts (see the first letter in the column), which coordinates programs for those in need in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the Nov. 1 request from a person requesting a power wheelchair. I have one that’s about a year old. It belonged to my father-in-law, who passed away in May. I would be willing to give it to the person in need. Thank you. It would be nice to help someone. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Sun Spots will email the person’s information to No Name. She usually doesn’t do that, but the offer of a such a valuable item would have overwhelmed this very generous person with responses.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Oct. 11, you published a letter that included the following:

“My two elderly sisters and I enjoyed a lunch together at Edward’s Restaurant. When it was time for our bill, the waitress told us it was already paid for by the lady sitting at the next table, who had already left. … It just goes to show that all angels are not just in heaven.”

Those sisters are very welcome. I am not an angel, but an example of how giving so little can make such a big difference, not only to those you give to, but what the giver receives.

The sisters’ letter to Sun Spots made my day. I have the note of thanks posted where I can see it everyday. Thank all of you for what you have given me. I have been in a “giving” profession for more than 20 years and truly appreciate your thanks. Happy holidays! — S. via email

ANSWER: This is the first time Sun Spots can remember receiving a response to a thank-you letter. What a treat!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I hope you can help me by printing this letter. I am looking for a 1958 Lewiston High School yearbook. If someone would like to part with one, call me at 783-3044. — Simone L.
