SABATTUS — A head-on collision at the corner of Routes 126 and 9 sent at least one man to the hospital Sunday evening.

Sabattus fire Chief Don Therrien said emergency crews were called to the scene, which was at the intersection of the two state routes, also known as Sabattus and Middle roads, about 7:05 p.m.

According to Therrien, a Honda Civic with a single occupant collided with a Chevy Tahoe with two adults and two infants on board. The Honda left the road and landed on the lawn of Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

The driver was extricated from the wreckage by rescue crews who used the jaws of life and a reciprocating saw.

“We were going to take him out the side door, but after evaluating him, we decided we had to take off the roof,” Therrien said.

Therrien said 14 volunteers from the department were assisted by the Sabattus Police Department, Androscoggin County Sherrif’s Office, and two crews from United Ambulance. The crash remains under investigation by the Sabattus Police Department.

After an initial medical evaluation, all occupants of the Tahoe were released.
