FARMINGTON — The Cooktop Heroes, or the town’s FIRST Lego League Team, presented the “safety stove” it created to the RSU 9 board Tuesday night.
The Cooktop Heroes call it a Spectacular Senior Safety Stove that would run on propane gas and shut off when weight is lifted from a burner. It also has an automatic timer that can be set to shut off if someone forgets to turn the burner off.
Another project of the Farmington FIRST Lego League Team was to program a robot to do tasks for seniors such as collecting quilt pieces and identifying medicine bottles by color. The robot they created is programmed to do various missions.
The team will take their project to a state FIRST Lego Team competition against about 75 teams, ages 8 to 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Augusta Civic Center.
The goal of the team was to come up with a solution to keep older generations safe and make life easier for them, Coach Claire Andrews of Farmington said. The stove really works, she said, when it is hooked up.
The team practices at her house.
The members presented a skit with each one taking a part to demonstrate their stove and the safety features and the research they did for the project.
They investigated the lives of seniors and interviewed the women at The Pierce House in Farmington to find out what problems and older person faces, Andrews said. They went on to find a solution.
They also went to C.J.’s Appliance in Farmington to learn about stoves and how a gas stove top works. Through their research they found that older people prefer gas, Andrews said. They also worked with a team member’s grandmother, Wendy Huish.
Members of the team, ages 11 to 13, are Grace Andrews, Zoe Huish, Zeke Robinson, Alden Thompson Vought, James Guillame, Ben Andrews and Thomas Marshall. Coaches helping Claire Andrews are Alex Claverie and Mike Guerrette.
