If any of the members of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks are ignorant of the “baseball as she is played,” they have little excuse, for a talk on “Inside Baseball” by William F. Carrigan, the Lewiston native and star backstop of the Boston red Sox, was a feature of the Thanksgiving eve social session held at the home on Ash Street Wednesday evening. Carrigan described the life of a ball player from the time he signs his contract to the time he starts playing, and through to the championship of the world. He described in detail the life at the training camp when the team starts off in the spring, the system of signaling used in the games, and how the teams figure to defeat other teams.

(Editorial, Lewiston Daily Sun) The new owner of the Clark Shoe Co. in Auburn, Herbert J. Lee, provides a refreshing new look at the competitive prospects of the shoe industry in Auburn and the United States. He contends that the spectre of foreign competition has been blown up all out of proportion. Shoe imports amount to only five percent of the American market, and will not rise over ten percent, he feels. The Auburn manufacturer, right or wrong, deserves commendation for having the courage, imagination and enterprise to keep shoe making a going, growing and prosperous business.

25 years ago, 1987
Lewiston City Councilors will be asked Tuesday to allocate $250,000 for further study of the River Road landfill, which officials say is nearly filled to capacity. The city will have to spend several million dollars in the near future to complete a landfill expansion.
