WILTON — Oh, the education supplies they plan to buy.

Farmington Walmart store Manager Greg Patterson and community relations representative Peter Zanoni paid a visit Thursday to G.D. Cushing School bearing $500 in gift cards.

“We do appreciate teachers,” Patterson said.

He knows, he said, that teachers spend money out of their own pockets for extras and supplies for education.

The Wal-Mart Corp. is giving gift cards to teachers to help supplement education.

“I think we always look to help teachers and education,” Patterson said. “I know it’s not much.”

He got no further than that before the teachers voiced their opinions and assured him it was a lot for them.

Patterson presented $50 Wal-Mart gift cards to 10 teachers. Zanoni said the cards need to be activated by Dec. 31. Teachers assured him not to worry.

School Principal Darlene Paine said among the items teachers planned to buy were children’s books, craft supplies, indoor recess games and a couple CD players. Patterson said when they go to buy the CD players to come see him at the store. He told them not to spend their gift cards on them.

RSU 9 Superintendent Mike Cormier said after the presentation that he suggested the gift cards go to Cushing School teachers, because the school has a high percentage of students who get free and reduced-price lunches.
