FARMINGTON — Students in the Katahdin Community at the middle school are holding an auction at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Mt. Blue Middle School. The purpose is for students to raise money to help pay their way to go on school trips.

Lots of great gifts are to be had for the holidays, Katahdin leader Maureen Oswald said.

Students will be auctioning off their own donated items to raise money to go into their fundraising accounts. It is 100 percent profit to the students to put toward transportation and admission costs for field trips.

“Fundraising accounts are needed to bus kids to and from any field experience that leaves the property of the middle school, and for admission costs to wherever we go,” Oswald said.

Even when students travel down the road to UMF, they have to pay busing costs, she said.

“Many students can afford to pay for themselves, but many cannot,” she said.

There will be a combination of silent and blind auctions, and an auction with an auctioneer. A blind auction is where there are slips of paper and covered containers. You put your name and three amounts you would like to bid on the paper and put it in the container next to the item, Oswald said.

No one can see your bid, and at the end of the evening the highest bidder gets the item.
