AUBURN – A schoolwide assembly to kick off Edward Little High School’s coat and jacket drive will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the school gym.

Students, staff and parents will be asked to send in clean jackets and coats for children and adults Wednesday and through Dec. 19, said Rebecca Hefty, who teaches physical education and health at the school. The coats and jackets will be turned over to WCSH’s Coats for Kids 13th annual drive.

Each year during homecoming students get involved in a good cause. This season the school is making helping others a bigger theme, she said. “It’s good for kids to see making donations and volunteering not just for credit and graduation, but something that is lifelong.”

There are plenty of struggling families who could use a warm jacket or coat, she said.

“It’s not just elementary kids,” Hefty said. “Sometimes we tend to overlook high school students. We have a lot in need, not only for jackets but for clothing, food, the necessities.”

At Edward Little each student has a mentor teacher and is part of a mentor group. The school is turning the coat and jacket drive into “a competition to give back,” Hefty said. “Each group will make donations. The more the better. Not all students will be able to participate, but in some families there may be “an abundance of jackets and clothing stored.

On Wednesday during the assembly students will hear from charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army, on the need in Lewiston-Auburn. Students will begin placing coats and jackets in boxes.

Jackets and coats sizes 4T through adults are needed. They should be in decent shape and clean.
