OAKLAND, Maine (AP) — Police in Oakland are investigating what they call a “particularly distasteful” crime in which a burglar broke into an elderly couple’s home and stole Christmas presents intended for family.

Eighty-seven-year-old Charlotte Lovejoy says she and her husband woke up Thursday morning to discover that 15 Christmas presents as well as prescription medications had been pilfered as they slept. One present was meant for the couple’s 6-year-old grandniece.

Lovejoy tells the Morning Sentinel that the theft is a serious financial blow for her and her husband, as they are living on fixed Social Security payments.

She is vowing that she will not lose her Christmas spirit.

Oakland police withheld certain details related to the burglary because the investigation is ongoing.
