100 years ago, 1912
The entire village of Turner was threatened this morning by a fire which started in a house owned by Fred W. Mitchell just opposite the Baptist Church and spread to adjoining buildings with great rapidity. At one time six buildings were burning and only a shift of a stiff breeze which was blowing saved the village from a general conflagration. Aid was summoned from Lewiston although when the steamer, hose wagon and crew arrived their help was not needed. The loss will probably reach from $2,500 to $3,000.

50 years ago, 1962
The president of the Bates Manufacturing Co. told Lewiston city officials last night that the giant textile firm does not intend to pay its $338,455 tax bill this year because “it’s double what it should be.” A. Phillip Goldsmith, meeting with municipal officials for a straight-from-the-shoulder talk about taxation and business conditions, told them, “I sincerely think that the company must have relief based on the facts of life, the economics.” And Goldsmith asked the municipal officers,“Please don’t put us out of business.” The firm employs 2,200 Twin City residents in two plants here with an annual payroll of eight million dollars.

Androscoggin County has received almost $1 million in federal and state reimbursement funds for flood damage to residential and municipally owned property. Damage caused by the state’s worst flood on record last April was pegged at nearly $4 million.
