I chuckle at some of the letters to the editor and responses due to their obvious bias and choice of “facts.” When I saw the letter from Joseph Nugent (Dec. 1) taking Bob Macdonald to task for allegedly not supporting veterans, I stopped smiling and decided to respond with facts that come from personal experience.

Macdonald and I are on opposite sides on many political issues, but we both agree on the honor, sacrifice and dignity of the service that veterans have provided to America. When it comes to serving those who served our country, he is right at the forefront, offering his advice to help those in need.

I know, because the minute I told him about my cancer, he outlined the VA benefits that are available and how the VFW could help with the paperwork and expedite my case. If it weren’t for his counsel, I would have had to struggle my way through the labyrinth of red tape that often characterizes the VA.

Nugent obviously does not really know the man behind the mayor, and has no real familiarity with Bob, the VFW commander, nor Bob the veteran.

It’s easy to attack a person’s letter expressing an opinion and the words that a person uses, and Nugent does show sensitivity to veterans’ issues, but his advice as to how Macdonald “should be taking a proactive stance” shows ignorance of what he already does.

In this case, actions, indeed, speak louder than words.
