ANDOVER — James H. Bodwell, 82, of Andover, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, at his home following a brief illness.

He was born May 28, 1930, a son of the late Ira and Marion (Robinson) Bodwell. He grew up in the Andover area and attended Andover schools. He was a graduate of Andover High School, Class of 1948. He studied math and physics at the University of Maine at Farmington and was on active duty in the U.S Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. He also served in the Marine reserves until 1960.

James received a degree in radio and television technology in 1956. In 1958, he began work at IBM corporation and was known as “the computer guy.” He stayed with IBM for 38 years.

James was a statewide customer engineer and went to all of the mills, factories and hospitals that had IBM computers. He was also involved with the Telstar Satellite Station in Andover. Also in 1958, James met Elizabeth A. Driscoll at Bath Iron Works and they became married on June 25, 1960. They moved back to Andover in 1962. James enjoyed ski jumping, cross country skiing, golf, hunting and was a big Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

James was very active in the Pineland Ski Club and Bill Koch ski meets. He also enjoyed his time spent being a coach and umpire for multiple baseball games.

He is survived by two children, Richard J. Bodwell of New Hampshire, and Deborah Bodwell Travers of Turner; four grandsons, Justin, Luke, Zack and Jimmy; a brother, Paul and Sally of Bethel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Neal; sister-in-law, Jean; his baby brother, Raymond; and three months ago, lost his beloved wife, Elizabeth of 52 years.
