100 years ago, 1912
Special religious exercises are to be held at Bates College between the dates of Jan. 8 and 12, these having been arranged by the Y.M.C.A secretary Arthur G. Cushman and others interested in the work. The Y.M.C.A. work has been going well this year and out of the 275 men who are students at Bates, 220 have enrolled in the Bible classes of which there are seventeen. This campaign is in a way a culmination to the study and a beginning of more Social Service work.

50 years ago, 1962
Five Lewiston-Auburn accordion musicians who call themselves “The Royal Chords” Monday night won the Teen-age Talent Contest on the Youth Cavalcade Program, Channel 6 TV, and the group accepted a U.S. Savings Bond instead of an audition on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. The musicians are Carol Patterson and Carol Marchessault, both of Auburn, and Vincent Lobozzo, Richard Morin and Gregory Day, of Lewiston.

25 years ago, 1987
Officials say people who are considered homeless in Lewiston are usually able to find some kind of temporary housing, either with family, friends or at one of a handful of shelters that offer a temporary place to stay. Lewiston Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscom said his officers have had trouble identifying homeless people in the city. While neighboring Portland has a homeless population estimated at nearly 300, Hanscom said, “It seems strange that 35 miles up the road there is a zero (homeless) population.”
