BETHEL – The Board of Selectmen discussed changes made to the town’s administration ordinance at Wednesday night’s meeting.

The amendments would allow the board to create an oversight committee for the Bingham Forest management plan, which was presented to selectmen by Jerry Bley at a Nov. 5 meeting.

According to Bley’s plan, the board would be required to create the Bingham Forest Authority, which would consist of “five members appointed by selectmen” who would ideally “have expertise in water quality, timber management, recreation development, wildlife preservation and local tourism economy.”

“What I did here was borrow the language from the Airport Authority plan and replaced certain phrases so it would work for the Bingham Forest Authority,” Town Manager James Doar said.

He presented the amendments to selectmen for discussion, saying the ordinance did not require any voting since he wanted the board’s opinion before it was finalized.

Doar also said that while re-reading the ordinance prior to the meeting, he noticed he forgot to address the Bethel Water District and its voting member.

Selectman Peter Southam questioned whether or not a limit on grants was necessary.

“I would assume we’d accept any amount of money being offered to us through grants,” Southam said, “and the more the better.  I’m just not sure why we have a cap on the grant money.”

Chairman Stan Howe told Southam and others on the board that he would deliberate and get back to them with a solution.

In other business, the board approved four concealed weapons permits and also renewed the liquor license and entertainment permits for the Sunday River Brewing Company.

The board also unanimously voted to relicense several automobile, graveyard and junkyard permits, but according to Doar, the board would have to approve them and sign them later since they were not completed as of Wednesday night.
