100 years ago, 1912
Christmas was observed at the Park Street M.E. Church with an entertainment and Christmas tree. A stereopticon lecture, with fine view of Bethlehem, was given. An interesting program was given at the Main Street Free Baptist Church by the children of the Sunday School. Rev. A.T. Salley spoke on the meaning of Christmas and the origin of Santa Claus. The banquet room of the Hammond Street M.E. Church vestry presented a unique appearance, last evening, with decorations resembling a huge chimney.

50 years ago, 1962
The Auburn Fire Department’s peaceful holiday period came to an end today when a flaming Christmas tree damaged a part of an Auburn man’s Turner Road home. The fire apparently started from a faulty extension cord. The homeowner, who was in the cellar of the house, found the house full of smoke. He entered the living room and discovered the flaming Christmas tree. Fire damage was done to the TV set and a living room chair, as well as smoke damage throughout the house.

25 years ago, 1987
An Auburn woman found two Christmas gifts on Hammond Street in Lewiston Friday afternoon and turned them over to Lewiston police. The neatly wrapped gifts are marked: “to Nathan from Santa,” and “to Grammy from Nathan,” according to Lewiston police. The owner can pick up the lost gifts at the police headquarters on Park Street. They were found by Mary Bent, police said.
