The Twin Cities will ring in 1988 in style with New Year’s L-A, an evening of nonstop entertainment that will begin in the afternoon with a puppet’s version of “The Nutcracker” and end at midnight with fireworks. The event is modeled after similar celebrations in Boston and Portland. The evening, which St. Mary’s Hospital is promoting as a chemical-free celebration, will feature something for everyone, from storytellers and comedians to tap dancing and rock ’n’ roll. “It’s been positive or neutral,” Assistant Director Martha Dumais says of the public’s reaction to a New Year’s eve minus champagne. “I guess when you emphasize ‘chemical-free’ you expect to hear some disappointment but I haven’t really picked up any of that kind of sentiment.”
