HAMDEN, Conn. —  Justin Edwards scored a game-high 26 points to lead the University of Maine men’s basketball team to a 76-71 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center. Maine is now 5-8 on the year while Quinnipiac falls to 4-7.

Maine was down 9-5 early but Jon Meghna hit Alasdair Fraser down low, and after a nice spin move Fraser converted the layup to start an 8-to-2 run for Maine.

The Bobcats responded to take an 18-15 lead with 11:34 left in the half but Edwards responded with a three to tie it.

The teams exchanged baskets and it was 26-26 with 7:48 remaining, but the Bobcats scored the next six points to take a 32-26 lead. Xavier Pollard stopped the run with a pair of free throws with 6:11 left. He then stole the ball on the defensive end and raced ahead for a layup to cut the lead to two.

Quinnipiac expanded the lead to 39-34 with three minutes left, but an Edwards layup and three-pointer knotted the game with 1:20 left.

Brandeis 85, Bates 68

LEWISTON — Brandeis University started the game with an 11-2 run and led wire to wire in an 85-68 defeat of Bates College in non-conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium.

Bates drops to 5-7 with its second straight loss, while Brandeis rises to 9-2 with its second consecutive victory, in the Judges’ first outing since Dec. 11.

Junior guard Gabriel Moton led the Judges with 21 points and 12 rebounds, to go wih five assists. Junior guard Derek Retos added 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-5 three-point distance. Junior forward Alex Stoyle contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists in the win.

Bates senior center Ed Bogdanovich led the Bobcats with 18 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Mark Brust and sophomore Graham Safford scored 13 points apiece, and sophomore Billy Selmon added 11 points off the bench. Junior Luke Matarazzo dished out five assists for Bates, while Brust distributed four more.

CMS 81, USM 75

SALEM, Mass.  — Sophomore guard Jack Grodahl canned his third three-pointer of the game with 1:07 remaining in overtime to propel the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags to a 81-75 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the third game of the Salem State Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon at Salem State University’s O’Keefe Center.

Ahead by one, 72-71, Grodahl’s dagger of a three gave the Stags some breathing room in a tightly contested game.  In the final moments of regulation, both teams traded three-pointers to set up the overtime period.With the game tied at 62, Stag senor Cody Mivshek drained a three with two minutes remaining, before Southern Maine senior Sean Bergeron  pulled the Huskies even with three from the top of a key with one minute remaining.

Women’s basketball

USM 75, D’Youville 55

SALEM, Mass. —  Senior forward Jordan Grant led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and sophomore forward Rebecca Knight recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the 16th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 75-55 win over the D’Youville College Spartans in the first game of the Salem State Holiday Classic at the O’Keefe Center.

Grant was 8-for-12 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action as all 15 Huskies played.  Knight was an outstanding 7-for-9 in 27 minutes of action and earned game-high honors with 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.Junior forward Nash Biliew  had nine points and eight rebounds in 14 minutes off of the bench. 

Bowdoin 66, Clarkson 35

BRUNSWICK — Kaitlin Donahoe scored a game-high 20 points with nine assists and four steals to lead the Bowdoin College women’s basketball team to a 66-35 win over Clarkson in the opening round of the 2012 Bowdoin Holiday Invitational Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.

Kirsten Prue added 17 points, including five three-pointers, for the Polar Bears, who improve to 4-4 and will play in the championship game Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Ashley Loggins scored a team-best 19 points with 11 rebounds in 40 minutes of play for the Golden Knights, who will play in the third-place game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
