ANSWER: Sun Spots emailed Lewiston High School Principal Gus LeBlanc, who gets points for answering the same day, at night and during school vacation week.

“The answer is lengthy but I will try to hit the major points for you. In order to receive a Lewiston High School diploma a student must successfully complete 24 credits. Of the 24 the following are required core classes: four credits in English; three credits in mathematics; three credits in science (one must be a life science with lab and one must be a physical science with lab); three credits in social studies (one must be U.S. History and one must be government); one credit in Fine Arts; one-half credit in health and one credit in physical education. The remaining credits are electives.”

“The answer to the second question is more difficult. Students with an identified learning disability are eligible for special education services and an Individualized Learning Plan, which will identify additional support and or modifications to assist the student.

“Students who are English Language Learners (English being their second language) have similar services and support.

“Lewiston High School also has several alternative learning options available to our students. Lewiston Academy is an alternative education program for juniors and seniors who may find themselves not on track for graduation.

“In addition, the high school places students in grades nine through 12 in off-campus alternative programs that focus on individualized learning programs. There is also credit recovery classes offered through “PM School” which is an after-school program to make up missed classes.

“The high school offers an extensive summer school each year. Both PM School and summer school and the alternative placements are free to Lewiston High School students.

“Lewiston High School offers both a June and August graduation. The August graduation offers recognition for students that may miss qualifying for the June graduation due to one or two missing credits. Lewiston High School also works closely with Lewiston Adult Education to assist students in receiving their diploma through adult education in certain circumstances.
